Circumaural headphones enclose the whole ear in a muff.
AuSIM believes that circumaural headphones are more consistenty
positioned on listeners, due to their self-centering nature.
Consistent positioning results in much better virtual audio imaging.
Closed headphones attentuate (and thus occlude) the real-world sound.
These are appropriate for synthetic aural environments.
Open headphones allow the real-world sound to pass through the headphone,
allowing the displayed audio and the room sound to be naturally mixed.
These are appropriate for augmented aural environments.
